If you're chasing steep thrills, Aspen Highlands will humble you in the best way. Its Highland Bowl is a hike-to, above-treeline bowl with pitch that gets steeper the higher you climb. The ski mountain rises right out of downtown Aspen and famously lacks any beginner terrain, which means every run is an exciting challenge. Plus, there’s culture to discover on the mountain. If you're new to the sport or bringing along beginner kiddos, Buttermilk is ideal with its wide-open, mellow slopes and a welcoming ski school. A night out in Aspen or Snowmass, whether it's a cozy candlelit spot or a mountaintop dinner with a view, is the kind of splurge you'll still be talking about next ski season. Think Champagne showers at après-ski institution Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro (a former ski patrol shack turned legend), Italian comfort food by candlelight at Sam's in Snowmass and seasonally inspired plates at Michelin-starred Bosq in Aspen. 

But that's only half the story. Both Aspen and Snowmass offer ways to eat well without blowing the budget. Hunting down happy hour and après-ski deals is practically a sport here. Both Limelight Hotels in Aspen and Snowmass have happy hour deals in their lounges; Snowmass’s slopeside Venga Venga has happy hour Mexican fare; and spots in Aspen like Ajax Tavern, Zane’s Tavern and Aspen Brewing Company also have specials even the locals love.

Every day, I'm reminded of how much there is to do once I've clicked out of my bindings.
