Long Lunches and Big Views — A Day in Crans-Montana, Start to Finish
By Ski.com

US Highway 89 drops south out of Jackson and follows the Snake River through canyon walls that close in tight before the valley opens back up, wide and quiet, with national forest pressing in on every side. As you follow the winding road, you pass by hot springs and idyllic ranches with horses in the field. This is where Snake River Sporting Club sits: nearly 1,000 private acres along the river and the edge of the Bridger-Teton, a short drive or shuttle ride from the lifts at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort but a world away from the village crowds. Call it refined wilderness: world-class skiing at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort or Snow King, and a private, secluded Western retreat to come home to at the end of the day.
Not everyone in your group wants first chair to last call, and reconciling that with everyone else usually means somebody compromises. Snake River Sporting Club was built to solve that problem instead of splitting the difference. Ski hard, or don’t ski at all: everyone wins.
It’s one of the best properties I’ve booked for families, groups, or couples wanting something different from the usual resort stay.

The Sylvan Lodge covers the hotel side of the property: hotel-style rooms, penthouses, suites, and junior suites. Guests get access to club activities and The Hub, the property’s concierge and event planning team that handles reservations and logistics. The lodge itself has a lobby with fireplaces, an on-site restaurant, and a rooftop with views over the valley.
For groups who want more space and privacy, The Cabins at Snake River Sporting Club sit further out on the property, fully furnished and set apart from the main lodge in the surrounding wilderness.
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort earns its reputation: 4,139 vertical feet, legendary chutes like Corbet’s Couloir, and some of the deepest, driest powder in Wyoming. It’s the kind of terrain hardcore skiers plan entire seasons around. A few minutes away, Snow King adds a mellower alternative, with night skiing under the lights for anyone who wants one more run after the sun goes down. A complimentary shuttle from Snake River Sporting Club covers the drive to both, so neither mountain is ever far away.

For the days when the resort isn’t enough, heli-ski pickups leave right from the property and fly you out to untracked backcountry in the Snake River and Gros Ventre ranges. It’s a rare setup where the lodge takes powder as seriously as you do.
“It was such a special way to experience Wyoming, and there’s still so much I want to do,” says McKenna Sanford, a Ski.com Marketing team member who visited on a recent FAM trip. “Next time, I can’t wait to book a heli-skiing adventure that departs right from the lodge.”

Ski resort villages can get crowded once the lifts close: full shuttle buses back to the parking lot and long waits for après seating. Snake River Sporting Club skips that scene entirely. The day ends back at the property instead, with the river running past and nothing but peace and wilderness around you.
My favorite part of Snake River Sporting Club is that it’s bordered by nature on all sides. The scenery and the seclusion of the property really stood out to me.

The accommodations are built for whatever kind of group you brought: guest rooms and suites at The Sylvan Lodge sized up to four bedrooms, or cabins just as spacious, with full access to every amenity on the property. Private homes work well for large families or reunions, and the hotel rooms and event space cover bigger groups that want to stay together.
“The lodge is cozy, the staff are great, and the restaurant food is always good,” says McKenna. “You’re tucked away in the Wyoming wilderness, surrounded by beautiful scenery, yet still have all the comforts of a luxury retreat.”
“It’s a great option for groups where skiing isn’t everyone’s main priority,” adds Emma Howard, a Ski.com Mountain Travel Expert. “A few clients hesitate about being away from the resort and town, but for the right group, it’s a hidden gem.”
You don’t have to be on the mountain to fill a morning here. Snowshoe trails start right from the lodge door and wind through quiet cottonwood groves along the frozen riverbank, no shuttle or lift line required, just snow underfoot and the river running somewhere off to the side.
The property also runs guided fly fishing during the summer on the Snake River. “I loved the fly fishing demo,” says Peter. “If clients are interested in fly fishing during a winter trip, the concierge can arrange a wonderful ice fishing excursion with local outfitters.”
“Stargazing from the rooftop was one of my favorite parts of the trip,” says McKenna. “With cocktails in hand and fire pits keeping us cozy, an astronomer guided us through a telescope viewing of the night sky. We saw star clusters, constellations, and distant galaxies while hearing stories about the stars above us.”
“Another highlight was a horse-drawn carriage ride with hot toddies in hand,” McKenna adds. “We got to meet the Clydesdales, explore the property’s landscape and even spot elk and other wildlife along the way.”
The Spa at The Sylvan Lodge rounds it out with bodywork and recovery treatments for sore legs after a day on the mountain, and wellness routines for anyone who skipped the mountain entirely.

Whatever travelers’ days looked like, whether chasing powder runs or spending a slow morning by the river, everyone lands in the same place come dusk. That’s the real advantage of a basecamp like this: the group reunites in comfort and luxury at the end of each day.
“We had the opportunity to dine at the River Room, the property’s private dining room overlooking the golf course,” says Emma. “It was one of the best meals of the trip.”
“We had a great dinner up at the clubhouse. The staff drove us up there at sunset, so we got the view along with the meal,” says Caroline Kipp, a Ski.com Marketing team member.
“The staff was attentive the whole stay,” Caroline adds. “They were helpful and friendly, and made sure everything went smoothly.”
A trip like this is easier to plan with help. A Ski.com Mountain Travel Expert can line up private accommodations, lift packages, and a custom activity itinerary at Snake River Sporting Club, so the only decision left is whether you’re skiing tomorrow or sleeping in.
