How to get to Wengen

Wengen is a charming, car-free village perched in the Bernese Oberland, accessible only by train. The two closest international airports are Zurich Airport (ZRH), located approximately 83 miles away with a travel time of about 2.5 to 3 hours, and Geneva Airport (GVA), which is around 143 miles away and takes about 3.5 to 4 hours by car and train combined.

From either airport, travelers can reach Wengen by first taking a train to Interlaken Ost, then transferring to the Bernese Oberland Railway to Lauterbrunnen. From Lauterbrunnen, Wengen is a 15-minute scenic train ride uphill—cars are not permitted in the village, so the train is the only public route. Zurich offers the most frequent and direct train connections, making it the preferred airport for ease of travel. If you're traveling with a lot of luggage or as part of a group, private shuttle services to Lauterbrunnen are available and can be conveniently arranged by your Mountain Travel Expert. From there, the final leg to Wengen is made by train.

Getting around

Upon arriving in the village via the cogwheel train from Lauterbrunnen, you’ll find everything conveniently within walking distance. From hotels and shops to ski lifts and restaurants, the charm of this destination lies in its effortless accessibility. Electric taxis and luggage sleds are available for a fee, providing a convenient solution for travelers with heavy bags or limited mobility.

Public transportation in the region includes the Wengernalpbahn (WAB) train that connects Wengen to nearby Lauterbrunnen and Kleine Scheidegg with regular service, making it easy to reach neighboring ski areas like Grindelwald and Mürren. Wengen is connected to Männlichen via a gondola, and the Wengernalp Railway connects Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg and Grindelwald. Ski pass holders enjoy complimentary access to these lifts and trains within the ski area, making it easy to explore the entire Jungfrau region. While the trains themselves are not complementary, regional travel passes like the Jungfrau Travel Pass or the Berner Oberland Regional Pass offer great value for skiers and sightseers looking to ride. Day trips to Interlaken, Jungfraujoch, and the broader Jungfrau region are simple to organize using the efficient and well-coordinated Swiss public transit system.

Skiing in Wengen

Wengen lies at the heart of the valley, offering convenient access to the Grindelwald-Wengen ski area. The landscape evokes the grandeur of a James Bond film, with the majestic peaks of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau rising dramatically above the picturesque villages nestled below.

Grindelwald and Wengen offer two unique ski areas to explore. Grindelwald-First is exclusively accessible from Grindelwald village, while Kleine Scheidegg can be reached from both Grindelwald and Wengen, providing versatile entry points to this alpine paradise. Both locations offer beginner and intermediate ski slopes, but expert skiers may find the terrain somewhat underwhelming in terms of challenge. Wengen is an excellent choice for families and anyone who enjoys wide, gentle slopes ideal for relaxed cruising rather than steep, challenging terrain.

Experienced skiers should make their way to the Kleine Scheidegg/Männlichen slope, primarily accessed on the Grindelwald side. There are incredible runs that begin at the ridge dividing the two sides of the ski area, offering an exciting challenge for advanced skiers and riders.

Family vacations in Wengen

The Wengen-Männlichen Aerial Cableway accessed from the heart of Wengen village, transports you swiftly to the Männlichen slopes, where families can enjoy some of the best skiing in the Jungfrau region. The ride itself is a highlight, with stunning views and even an open-air balcony experience in summer. The Jungfrau region’s most iconic attraction is Jungfraujoch, “The Top of Europe.” This breathtaking plateau rests in the Jungfrau mountain range, is accessible by train and draws countless visitors each year. However, be prepared for crowded trains and bustling lookouts. Combined with the effects of the high altitude, the experience can feel overwhelming for some.

For those seeking a quieter adventure, Wengen offers an excellent base for outdoor activities year-round. The village’s walkable streets and direct gondola access to family-friendly hiking trails and playgrounds on Männlichen make it an ideal destination for families. A hiking highlight is the two-and-a-half-hour hike to Kleine Scheidegg. This well-maintained and clearly marked trail is a perfect family alternative to the Jungfraujoch train ride that offers sweeping views and, thanks to most tourists opting for the train, remains blissfully uncrowded. As is tradition in Switzerland, Wengen delights with its cheesy cuisine. Visit Restaurant Tavern at the Hotel Bernerhof and indulge in their classic fondue—a perfectly cheesy way to end a day of family adventure. Those staying in centrally located condos or private rentals can easily reach everything they need. Many visitors also opt for the Swiss Travel Pass, offering seamless travel across the region via trains, boats, and cable cars.
