In 1971, Barry Lefkowitz and Skip Strasburger started a travel outfit in Aspen, Colorado, the kind of place where big ideas start on a napkin. Legend has it they ran the whole operation out of a two-bedroom hotel suite at the Continental Inn, tracking clients' travel plans on a pinboard map of North America.

By 1974, that startup had grown, and it needed a name to match: Aspen Ski Tours. For the next two decades, that's who they were. Then in 1999, the name changed one more time — to Ski.com.

The name changed, but the mission never did. Over the years that followed, Ski.com brought together some of the best names in ski travel, Lynx Vacations, GoWest Tours, Adventures on Skis, Sportours, AnyMountain Tours and later Rocky Mountain Tours, each one adding new mountains, new expertise and new ways to get travelers to the snow.

More than 55 years later, the pinboard map is gone. But the job hasn't changed: know the mountains, know the traveler and put the two together.
