How to get to Interlaken

Interlaken is conveniently located between two major international airports: Zurich Airport (ZRH) and Geneva Airport (GVA). Zurich Airport is the closest and more popular choice for international travelers, situated about 80 miles from Interlaken, while Geneva Airport is slightly farther at approximately 140 miles. Both airports are major hubs with excellent connections and offer multiple transfer options to Interlaken, including train services, private shuttles and rental cars.

From Zurich Airport, travelers can reach Interlaken in about two hours by direct train, and from Geneva, the train journey takes around three hours, with equally impressive scenery. Private transfers and shuttle services are also available for those seeking a more direct ride, especially if traveling with ski gear or family.

Getting around

Interlaken is a very pedestrian-friendly village, perfect for strolling and exploring on foot. While cars are allowed, most visitors prefer to walk or use the excellent public transport. The village has reliable taxis and an efficient public bus system that connects key areas and nearby attractions. For skiers and sightseers, Interlaken offers easy access to 14 chairlifts and the Firstbahn, a six-seater Gondola Cable car that runs from Grindelwald and Schreckfeld to First.

Skiing in Interlaken

Interlaken serves primarily as a lively base for accessing the Jungfrau region’s top ski areas, including Grindelwald, Wengen and Mürren. These surrounding resorts cater primarily to beginners and families, thanks to wide, gentle slopes and dedicated learning areas, though you’ll also find scenic intermediate terrain, challenging pistes, and off-piste options for advanced and expert skiers.

Lift passes in the Jungfrau ski region average around CHF 75–90 ($95-115 USD) for a full-day adult pass. Interlaken’s ski areas often offer early-bird discounts and multi-day savings. The most expensive months to ski are January and February, when demand peaks and snow conditions are prime.

Beginner Skiing and Ski Schools

Interlaken itself doesn’t have ski slopes, but it’s the perfect jumping-off point for beginner-friendly skiing in the Jungfrau region. Nearby resorts like Grindelwald offer gentle, wide beginner runs such as the long, forgiving slopes on Bodmi Arena. Expect sunny nursery slopes at Wengernalp and Kleine Scheidegg near Wengen, where beginners can practice in a relaxed atmosphere. Ski rentals are widely available in Interlaken and at the base stations in surrounding resorts, though prices are on the higher side compared to other European destinations. Several ski schools, including the highly rated Swiss Ski School Grindelwald and Outdoor Switzerland, provide group and private lessons, as well as specialized children's programs and family-friendly courses.

Family Winter Activities: Skiing and Beyond

Interlaken is an exceptional base for family ski vacations that offers much more than traditional downhill skiing. Families can enjoy gentle cross-country skiing trails and scenic snowshoeing routes around the lakes and forests. Snowboarding is popular in nearby Grindelwald and Wengen, with beginner-friendly parks and wide runs. For a classic winter thrill, there are exciting sledding tracks, including the famous Eiger Run.

Take advantage of Interlaken’s central location to explore other stunning parts of Switzerland. Its convenient positioning allows for easy day trips to destinations like Lucerne or even Lugano, offering endless opportunities for adventure. Visit Mürren, a picturesque gem that becomes even more enchanting under a blanket of snow. With plenty of snow on the ground, children can sled and play outside. Stroll around Old Town, browse the shops, and pick up a few souvenirs. Don’t miss visiting Thun Castle, which dates back to 1180! Join a guided Swiss Food Tour, starting at a charming cheese shop to sample local cheeses before indulging in sweet treats at the beloved Funky Chocolate Club.
