Swiss Alps Trip Recap: The Ultimate Guide from the Experts at Ski.com

Swiss Alps Trip Recap: The Ultimate Guide from the Experts at Ski.com

We recently wrapped up a memorable FAM trip through a few of Switzerland’s seriously impressive ski destinations—Saas-Fee, Crans-Montana, and Zermatt. All resorts left a strong impression on our team with their charm, terrain variety, and boutique luxury offerings. Here’s a look back at what we experienced, what stood out, and what to remember when recommending these spots to your clients.

Zermatt: Iconic Peaks and Refined Luxury

Before heading to Saas-Fee, we spent a few days in Zermatt, and it was easy to see why this iconic Swiss resort continues to be on every skier’s bucket list. With stunning views of the Matterhorn from just about every angle, a charming car-free village, and world-class skiing across both Switzerland and Italy, Zermatt delivers on all fronts. Zermatt is included with the full Ikon Pass, giving you access to up to 7 days of skiing in the breathtaking Matterhorn ski paradise. This includes iconic destinations like Zermatt, Rothorn, Gornergrat, and the Schwarzsee-Matterhorn Glacier Paradise.

On the Mountain

The ski terrain here is vast and diverse, and while a wind hold kept us from reaching Cervinia, we still got a great sense of Zermatt’s impressive infrastructure. The lift network is extensive, and skiing beneath the Matterhorn is a bucket-list moment in itself. The town buzzes with energy, offering a blend of après-ski scenes, shopping, and fine dining.

Where to Stay in Zermatt

Grand Hotel Zermatterhof

A timeless 5-star stay in the heart of Zermatt. Guests love the elegant atmosphere, indulgent spa, and top-notch breakfast buffet. Just 3 minutes from the bus and under 15 to the lifts, it’s central but quiet. Three on-site restaurants, including a Michelin-starred experience, adding serious culinary clout.

Le Mirabeau Resort & Spa

A stylish and convenient 4-star pick just steps from the Gornergrat station and the Sunnegga funicular. We stayed in the newly renovated Etoile wing with modern suites, sleek design, and access to a gourmet 5-course dinner included with half board. Bonus: A brand-new outdoor pool and sauna are coming Winter 2025/26.

Hotel Riffelhaus 1853

An unforgettable alpine lodge perched high above Zermatt only accessible by the Gornergrat train. It’s a snowy 100-yard stroll to the door (luggage help included!), but you’re rewarded with Matterhorn views from the sauna, hearty half-board dining, and cozy lodge vibes.

Hotel Tannenhof

A 3.5-star Superior gem that’s clean, well-kept, and budget-friendly. While the rooms are smaller, the family-friendly layout, including breakfast, and fun on-site Italian restaurant (home to a historic “Golden Lok” train engine!) make it a charming, value-packed option.

Saas-Fee: High-Alpine Charm with Boutique Vibes

After departing Zermatt (with a slight avalanche-induced delay), our group made our way to Saas-Fee via taxi. As it tends to go in the Alps, timing was everything. The road reopened just in time for our transfer, thanks in part to great coordination from the Mirabeau Hotel team.

The moment you arrive in Saas-Fee, it’s clear: this is a village that knows how to preserve its alpine magic. Like Zermatt, the resort is car-free, and electric shuttles handle transport to and from hotels. Most properties are just a short (5–7 minute) walk from the main bus drop-off.

Getting There

While it's accessible via train to Stalden, followed by bus or local taxi, we’d strongly recommend private transfers or hotel shuttles, especially families or anyone traveling with gear. A Mountain Travel Expert can set you up with the best transfer experience.

On-Mountain Experience

Saas-Fee is a great alternative base when Zermatt is full. It’s smaller and a bit quieter, but the views and charm are unmatched. The ski season kicks off early (think early November), though early-season conditions can be icy due to limited sun exposure.

One of the highlights? A trip to the world’s highest revolving restaurant, perched above the glacier and accessible by gondola and funicular. Just be warned. The altitude here is no joke, even for seasoned mountain travelers.

Where We Stayed in Saas-Fee

The Capra

This 5-star boutique hotel wowed us with its blend of luxury and warmth. With just 38 rooms (many of them connecting), it's an ideal fit for families or couples. Expect curated guest experiences, from ski safaris to private chef dinners. Bonus trivia: the “Last Christmas” music video was filmed here!

Walliserhof

Another 5-star option with a family-friendly twist. Think Easter-themed décor, glacier views, indoor pool, and childcare for ages 4–9 that even includes dinner.

Hotel Allalin

A 4-star property near The Capra with classic alpine styling. Great for folks seeking a simpler, no-frills experience.

Crans-Montana: Sun-Soaked Slopes and Family Appeal

From Saas-Fee, we hopped on the train to Sierre and made our way up to Crans-Montana. A small hiccup with our taxi gave us a chance to test the local funicular, which—despite being a 10-minute uphill walk to reach—was easy to navigate. Pro tip: Hotel pickups are available at the top station for smoother arrivals.

Resort Vibe

Crans-Montana is essentially two towns in one: Crans, the luxe half (think Gucci, Prada, and polished ambiance), and Montana, which leans more family-friendly and sporty. A free bus connects the two, and it’s all easy to explore on foot.

The resort gets plenty of sunshine and delivers panoramic views of Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn. It's an Epic Pass partner, making it accessible to a lot of North American travelers.

Skiing Snapshot

The ski terrain here is great for beginners and families, especially the learn-to-ski area on the golf course. While late-season snow was limited (and lower slopes were showing signs of spring), the experience felt familiar. Chairlifts over gondolas, and terrain that resembled a U.S. ski day.

Crans-Montana Hotels We Toured

Hotel Valaisia

Don’t let the 3-star label fool you as this felt more like a 4-star stay. Just across from the gondola, this property is a value-packed option for families. It features a full spa with lazy river, sauna, cold plunge, kids’ room, game room, and half-board dining.

Six Senses

If you're is looking for high-end wellness with major wow factor, this is the spot. Seasonal ski-in ski-out access, a full spa, Japanese restaurant (yes, with a DJ), and infinity pool make this a standout. It’s giving full White Lotus energy.

Crans Ambassador

Ski-in access and a near-all-room view of the valley? Yes, please. Just a short uphill walk from the gondola, this 5-star property offers a well-rounded wellness experience and spacious rooms.

LeCrans Hotel & Spa

Secluded and ultra-boutique, LeCrans has only 15 rooms, each with its own theme. The service is top-tier, the vibe is luxury-meets-ski lodge, and the dining is Michelin-level. Ski-out requires a short walk, but it’s well worth it for clients seeking exclusivity.

Final Thoughts & Takeaways

Saas-Fee felt like a magical, mountain escape perfect for families or boutique luxury seekers looking for something a little off the beaten path. Crans-Montana offered more of a sun-soaked, family-forward feel, with resort-style amenities, wellness experiences, and Epic Pass access.

Pro Tips:

  • Saas-Fee is a boutique alternative to Zermatt.
  • Crans-Montana as a great option for families, wellness travelers, and Epic Pass holders.
  • The perfect vacation for those looking to upgrade their ski vacation with unique experiences.
