About Davos

Davos, Switzerland, is where alpine tradition meets modern luxury, all wrapped up at an altitude of 5,120 feet, making it the highest town in Europe. With over 200 miles of skiable terrain across six distinct regions, Davos is a skier's paradise. From the legendary Parsenn runs to the vibrant freestyle parks at Jakobshorn, there’s something here for everyone—whether you're a seasoned pro or just finding your ski legs.

If you’re looking to go big, then a Davos ski vacation is right up your alley. Boasting the largest ski resort in Switzerland and the highest city in Europe, Davos comprises five separate ski areas, any one of which would be considered big by American standards. The Parsenn cog rail bahn (chairlift), which rises out of Davos Dorf, has increased uphill speed and capacity, ensuring that this historically—since 1931—popular ski resort giant is never too crowded. Non-skiers and vacationers looking for plenty of off-mountain activities have ample choices. Cruise around Davos’ miles upon miles of cross-country trails, speed down its tobogganing hills, and relax with the family on a cheerful sleigh ride. Ice skating and hockey enthusiasts will be wildly pleased to learn that Davos is home to Europe's largest outdoor rink.

When you’re ready to explore beyond the pistes, Davos has you covered with Europe’s largest natural ice rink, endless cross-country trails, and scenic winter hikes. Add in a vibrant cultural scene, including the Kirchner Museum, and you’ve got a destination that’s as dynamic off the slopes as it is on them. Davos isn’t just a ski trip; it’s a full-on winter experience with a touch of global sophistication.

Trains depart hourly from Zurich’s main station, making it easy to plan your trip. There are car rental options available, taking around two to two-and-a-half hours, depending on traffic and weather conditions. For added convenience, shuttle services operate during the winter season, offering direct transfers from the airport to Davos for approximately 80 CHF ($95 USD) one way. Other viable airport options include St. Gallen–Altenrhein Airport (ACH) and Friedrichshafen Airport (FDH) in Germany, 77 and 87 miles away respectively. Enjoy these scenic routes during the two-hour drive in the winter.

Getting around Davos is easy and convenient. The town offers a reliable local bus service that connects you to all the main ski areas, attractions, and nearby villages. Most hotels provide shuttle services, and with everything in close proximity, exploring Davos is as seamless as your ski runs.

Skiing in Davos

Klosters, the ski resort located down the road from Davos, is connected to the same ski circuit, making it easy to explore both villages during a Davos ski vacation. Smaller in size and quainter in nature, Klosters' village offers a warm and picturesque surrounding for your après-ski activities: shopping, tennis, squash, sleigh rides, nightlife and cultural events. With five ski areas spread out on both sides of the valley and descents from almost 9,000 feet, Davos skiing offers the alpine skier an endless amount of terrain. Advanced to expert skiers and snowboarders are best served at Davos, and intermediates have a handful of good options; one, because there are technically no beginner runs, and two, because it requires a somewhat seasoned skier to navigate Davos’ never-ending expanse. Freestyle enthusiasts will be happy with Davos’ two terrain parks. First-time park riders all the way to professionals will enjoy Davos, but it's Jakobshorn’s Jatz Park that will really get the adrenaline pumping. Jatz Park is also home to one of Europe’s largest superpipes.

Beginner Skiing in Davos, Switzerland
Davos has two awesome beginner areas—Bolgen and Bünda—that are perfect for getting your ski legs. Bolgen is right in Davos Platz near the Jakobshorn valley station, while Bünda is conveniently located in Davos Dorf near the railway station. Both spots are super accessible by public transport, making it easy to get on the slopes. With nearby rental shops and cozy restaurants for a midday break, your first ski experience will be as smooth as the Swiss snow. And with a professional ski instructor by your side, you'll be carving in no time!

Expert Skiing in Davos, Switzerland
Intermediates have their pick of Davos’ 200 miles of pistes. All five Davos ski areas aptly accommodate intermediate skiers, you’ll find genuine blue runs at all of them. You could seriously ski at this resort for several weeks and never ski or ride the same run twice. One of the most notable for advanced intermediates is the long red run from Weissfluhjoch down into Klosters. The views of Klosters and the surrounding peaks, and snow conditions, on this run are unforgettable. The Jakobshorn area provides advanced intermediates with even more options, while Rinerhorn is ideal for less seasoned intermediates, and families.

Family vacations in Davos

Families may love Davos’ varied terrain and family-friendly lodging options, but the sprawling village can make it hard to organize everyone. That said, other great services make up for it and then some, securing Davos reputation as a great place to bring your clan for a family ski vacation. Pischa ski area offers a childcare facility, while there are fun kiddie attractions in Bolgen and Rinerhorn. Families with aspiring freestyle skiers and snowboarders will appreciate the Jatz terrain park and Superpipe (one of Europe’s largest), located in the Jakobshorn area. Younger children can enjoy the mini-park in Rinerhorn.

The variety of hotels provide budget-conscious families with 69 comfortable double rooms, many of these employing connecting doors, which is a great feature for large families. The hotels are situated in the center and around Davos Platz and just a few minutes’ walk away from the popular Davos Promenade. While parents relax in the sauna or steam room, children can enjoy swimming in the indoor pool. Families will also appreciate the onsite kids club—open from Monday to Friday.
