Consistently ranked among the Top 10 Family Ski Resorts by Ski Magazine and Forbes, and named the “Premier Family Ski Resort” by Jetsetter, Steamboat’s reputation is backed by both expert acclaim and plenty of happy families who return year after year. With half of its terrain rated beginner or intermediate, one of the top-rated ski schools in North America, and famously fluffy Champagne Powder® snow, it’s the ideal place for kids to build confidence while parents cruise wide-open groomers or sneak in a tree run. Bonus: Kids 12 and under ski free with a paying adult.

From the approachable slopes and stress-free logistics to off-mountain fun like hot springs and snow tubing, it’s easy to see why Steamboat has become a favorite for family ski trips. Ready to make some memories? Our Mountain Travel Experts have put together a seamless, five-day itinerary to help you make the most of your Steamboat family ski vacation, both on and off the slopes.

Day 1: Settle into your accommodations and check out Steamboat's night skiing

With streamlined transportation, family-focused amenities and slopeside lodging that makes mornings effortless, Steamboat gets an A+ in hassle-free logistics. Steamboat Springs truly shines when it comes to family-friendly lodging, and few resorts come close to matching its variety of slopeside accommodations. Staying near the base area is a game-changer, especially with young kids in tow, with the luxury of ski-in ski-out access or short walks to the lifts.

For families flying in, Yampa Valley Regional Airport (HDN) is just 30 minutes away, and many lodging options include complimentary airport transfers, making your travel day smoother and eliminating the need for a rental car. Once you’re in town, Steamboat’s free and easy-to-navigate bus system makes it a breeze to get between the ski area, downtown, restaurants, grocery stores and more.

Experience Steamboat Springs’ Night Skiing

After you’ve checked into your room, bundle up, grab your gear and head out into the beautiful, crisp winter night to experience one of Steamboat’s most popular on-slope draws: night skiing. There’s nothing quite like making turns under the stars, and Steamboat is one of the few Colorado resorts that offers it. On weekends from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., the Christie Peak Express high-speed lift whisks skiers and riders up to 8,000 feet, where 5 trails catering to all levels await under the glow of high-tech stadium lights. Night skiing takes place just above the main base area at Gondola Plaza, right next to the ticket office and gear rental shops, making it incredibly convenient (especially after a travel day).

Pro tip: Have your Ski.com Mountain Travel Expert include night skiing in your arrival-day itinerary and book your lift tickets and rentals in advance to save time and skip the lines.

Day 2: Get your kiddos in Steamboat's Snowsports School and explore the mountain

Steamboat Springs’ renowned Snowsports School makes it easy for kids to build skills, gain confidence and fall in love with skiing or snowboarding from an early age. With programs for ages 3 to 17, there’s something for every young shredder. Sign them up for age- and skill-specific group lessons, enroll in the action-packed Ski Strong™ 3-Day Camp or keep the whole crew together with a private family lesson. Either way, you can rest easy knowing they’re in expert hands, learning, laughing and enjoying a warm lunch between laps.

While your youngsters are getting professional instruction and making friends, take the opportunity to ski at your own pace. If you’re looking for a couple of warm-up laps or some good cruisers, head over to the Sunshine lift, where Steamboat’s signature green and blue runs roll through wide-open terrain, playful glades and even a few mellow black diamonds. It’s a great spot for mixed-ability groups to ski their own level and still ride the lift together. If you’re on the hunt for Steamboat’s legendary Champagne Powder®, don’t miss the gladed, powdery tree skiing off the Sundown lift.

With the kids’ lunch happily taken care of in ski school, it’s the perfect time to treat yourself to a gourmet alpine escape at Ragnar’s, one of Steamboat’s most memorable on-mountain dining experiences. Located inside the Rendezvous Lodge and accessible exclusively by skiing or riding, Ragnar’s offers a cozy, Scandinavian-inspired atmosphere that pays homage to the Norwegian roots of Steamboat’s storied ski culture. Settle in for a well-earned midday break and enjoy standout dishes like the Ragnar’s Reuben or the mouth-watering Wienerschnitzel, both local favorites. And don’t miss their notorious Bloody Mary, known as one of the best on the mountain.

Day 3: More turns, more tree skiing and some tubing fun to top it off

Start the day with another round of skiing or snowboarding, whether that means dropping the kids off at ski school or sticking together for some family-friendly laps. For beginner terrain, head to Thunderhead Express and Burgess Creek Lift, where wide-open green runs and mellow cruisers make for an easygoing morning. For advanced and expert skiers, Steamboat is your playground. With 44% of Steamboat’s 3,741 acres rated expert or extreme, there’s no shortage of steeps, glades and powder stashes to explore. Steamboat is world-renowned for its tree skiing and dreamy powder, so don’t miss the chance to dip into the glades off Storm Peak Express. Take Dawn over to Rainbow, then ride Storm Peak up for access to long, challenging runs that are an expert skier’s dream.

Cap off another great day of skiing with an unforgettable family evening. Head over to Saddleback Ranch, just 15 miles from Steamboat, where you can zoom down Yee-Haw Hill, then cozy up in a Western-style lodge for hot chocolate, apple cider and hearty ranch fare. This fourth-generation, 8,000-acre working cattle ranch delivers big smiles and even bigger winter vibes. Or visit Howelsen Hill, right in downtown Steamboat, offering tubing under the lights with a glowing magic carpet lift. It’s a local favorite, and with a legacy of producing over 70 Olympians, this historic hill is a special place to play for kids and kids at heart.

Day 4: Ski a half day as a family and indulge in a hot spring soak in the evening

If you haven’t skied as a family yet, reserve at least a half-day to explore Steamboat’s world-class terrain together. Be sure to snap a family pic at the top of the Sunshine Express lift, which offers some of the most stunning on-resort views of the surrounding Yampa Valley. If your family has a competitive streak, make your way over to the NASTAR Race area off the Bashor lift for some fun, playful laps.

In the afternoon, unwind like a local with a visit to one of Steamboat’s most iconic après-ski experiences: Strawberry Park Hot Springs. Nestled in a rustic forest setting just outside of town, these natural, mineral-rich pools are the perfect way to soothe tired muscles after a day on the slopes. With multiple pools at varying temperatures, you’re sure to find the one that’s just right for you. Plus, shuttle services are available to and from most hotels, so you can relax from start to finish without worrying about the drive. Pro tip: The hot springs become adults-only after dark, so be sure to plan your visit accordingly if you're bringing the kids.

Wrap up the evening with a crowd-pleasing, family-friendly dinner at Mazzola’s Italian Restaurant, a Steamboat staple. Kids will love getting their hands on a ball of pizza dough to play with before the meal arrives, while adults can dive into hearty pastas, house-made ravioli and a well-curated wine list. With warm service, delicious comfort food and a laid-back vibe, it’s the kind of place that makes everyone at the table happy.

Day 5: Explore downtown Steamboat Springs and savor a Western-style family dinner

On your last day in Steamboat Springs, take a break from the slopes and spend some time exploring the heart of this authentic Western ski town, historic downtown Steamboat Springs. Lined with locally owned shops, galleries and cafés, Lincoln and Yampa Streets are tailor-made for a laid-back stroll. The kids will love Fuzziwig’s Candy Factory, a local favorite bursting with colorful sweets and retro treats, while parents can browse for keepsakes at the official Steamboat Resort merchandise store right on Lincoln Street.

If you’re looking for more off-mountain adventure, Steamboat offers something for every kind of explorer, from fat biking and snowmobiling to horseback rides, snow buggy tours and ice skating. History buffs of all ages will enjoy the Tread of Pioneers Museum, a must-visit that offers a glimpse into the rich heritage that shaped the Yampa Valley.

For a truly special farewell dinner, make a reservation at Hazie’s. Perched at the top of the gondola, Hazie’s offers elevated alpine dining with panoramic views of the sparkling Yampa Valley below. With a satisfying all-ages menu, it’s a picturesque way to end your Steamboat vacation on a high note.

When is the best month to visit Steamboat Springs?

The best time to ski Steamboat Springs really depends on what kind of experience you're after, but for many, February hits the sweet spot. By then, Steamboat’s famed Champagne Powder® is piling up, the full mountain is typically open and the crowds are smaller than during the holiday rush or spring break. It’s also prime time for tree skiing, with snow-laden glades offering up those soft, dreamy turns Steamboat is known for. Families, powder hounds and bluebird chasers alike will find February delivers that ideal blend of great snow, fewer lift lines and full-on mountain magic.
