All About Skiing In March In Colorado

By March, the shorter, darker and colder days of the year have worn off and ski resorts across Colorado begin to enjoy an abundance of beautiful, sunny days. While warm, mountain sunshine on your face is reason enough to book a trip to the mountains in March, there’s also plenty more reason to travel to ski country this spring.

Here’s everything you need to know about skiing in March in Colorado, including why it’s so great:

Yes! Colorado ski resorts are still open in March

Every single ski resort in Colorado is open through March, with most closing the first and second week of April. In fact, Colorado ski resorts often see their deepest snow bases during this month since it’s typically still snowing and spring storms tend to pack a heavier punch in terms of moisture. Some years, it snows well into May and some resorts will even re-open for Memorial Day skiing. It’s not uncommon for Arapahoe Basin to stay open until the 4th of July!

It’s sunny and warm—when it’s not snowing!

Colorado ski resorts are located in the Rocky Mountains and as such, they boast some of the highest elevations in the lower 48. This means that even in the dead of winter—when the sun is out—you feel it. However, that strength pales in comparison to Colorado’s spring-time sunshine. Since Colorado is technically considered part of the Southwest, the sun gets quite high in the sky in the spring and summer months, providing copious amounts of direct rays. For snow-loving sunbathers and fair-weather skiers and riders, nothing beats March in Colorado. Just don’t forget to bring your SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and hat/buff.

Fresh. soft, or slushy snow is likely

Whether you prefer slushy conditions or spring powder, it’s likely you’ll experience one or both on a ski trip to Colorado in March. Generally, if it’s not snowing, it’s warm and beautiful and if it’s not warm and beautiful, it’s snowing! In fact, March is often the snowiest month for many parts of the Centennial state, according to The Weather Channel.

Plus, if you’re a beginner, spring is an excellent time to learn. The snow is soft and forgiving, and the warmer, sunnier days make for more enjoyable learning conditions. Learn more →

Après-ski is exceptional

*Indoor dining will be limited for much of the 2021 ski season due to COVID-19. Please check availability at restaurants and bars prior to making apres plans.

For those who prefer outdoor patios for their post-skiing celebrations, March in Colorado is nothing short of exceptional. Don’t miss The Little Nell’s Oasis Champagne Bar on Aspen Mountain or the opportunity to experience an on-mountain lunch or afternoon cocktail at Aspen Highlands’ Cloud Nine. When it comes to high altitude apres, it’s tough to beat Telluride’s Alpino Vino or Bon Vivant. Crested Butte’s new Umbrella Bar provides stunning mountain views and al fresco enjoyment.

It’s Spring Break!

The longer, warmer days in the mountains lend themselves nicely to spring break vacationers who are in need of some high altitude therapy after a long winter of hitting the books. Although most outdoor concerts have been canceled this season, there’s still plenty of fun in the sun to be had. Get your Spring Break pod together and enjoy uncrowded slopes,  glowing sundecks, and the high mountain air of the Colorado Rockies.
