If a unique mountain experience, handsome and environmentally conscious village, and family-friendly on and off-mountain activities rank high on your wish list, then an Avoriaz ski vacation will suit you and yours flawlessly. The first thing you’ll notice in Avoriaz is: quiet. Cars aren’t allowed. Once you drop your car off at the parking lot near the base, you and your luggage are whisked up the mountain via a horse-drawn sleigh. Even the taxis in the village are sleighs. Because of its high alpine locale, skiers can literally ski around the village roads and pathways.

Avoriaz offers a handful of accommodations from modest lodging to five-star  ski in, ski out condos. And there are even more options just a cable car ride away in Morzine. Similarly, the Avoriaz dining scene offers some incredible ski in, ski out restaurants and French cafes, but having Morzine nearby opens up the dining possibilities even more.  An Avoriaz ski vacation holds a little slice of mountain heaven for any panache.

Avoriaz Ski Resort

This French ski resort is located smack-dab in the never-ending skiing enormity known as Portes du Soliel, a staggeringly huge 26,000-acre (650 km) ski resort circuit comprised of 13 resorts with 204 lifts, between France’s Mont Blanc and Switzerland’s Lake Geneva. Skiers and snowboarders  can access all 13 resorts on one ski pass, which offers not just an incredible deal, but an incomparable experience. Avoriaz sits just above Morzine, a well-known ski village and Tour de France stop. Europe’s ski resorts are namely built around original mountain towns, but Avoriaz is one of the largest “purpose-built” resorts in Europe, if not the world. It was originally constructed in the mid-60s and received some significant updates during the 2012-13 season including more than 400 new condos, two new restaurants in the Amara district, and a new cable car between Avoriaz and Morzine.

Families and fun-lovers alike won’t be able to get enough of Aquariaz; the resort’s new indoor jungle-themed pool with a lazy-river, Jacuzzi, sauna and climbing wall. To maintain its status as environmentally conscious resort, Avoriaz added a recycling facility and a new-wood burning generator. Avoriaz also recently integrated Burton’s progressive “Learn to Ride” snowboard program, which has a proven success rate at several U.S. ski resorts.
