My husband and I booked a week of skiing in Zermatt through ski.com as our honeymoon. It was an amazing trip. We had three choices of places to stay as part of our package, and chose the Perren, with Matterhorn View.
I definitely recommend the Perren, and for getting the Matterhorn View - it's worth it to wake up every morning and check out the mountain. The price is not too bad compared to other locations in Zermatt, but everything in town is pretty expensive.
The location is PERFECT as far as being w/in good walking distance of all the ski lifts, ski bus, and the main drags for shopping and restaurants.
The owners and folks at the front desk are very friendly and helpful. We got breakfast with our package, and both my husband and I really enjoyed what was offered for that meal. The yoghurts are local and EXCELLENT. I would recommend avoiding what's served in the metal box though - the eggs, sausage, and bacon were all a little . . . off from what I'm used to.
As a tip, if you are looking to save a few bucks up on the mountain, the Perren will allow you to make a sandwich in the morning w/ their delicious breads and deli meats and cheeses for only 4CHF for each sandwich. We did this every day after seeing the prices up on the mountain. WE would supplement our meal with some snacks and bottled water we got at the Migros grocery store just up the road.
The room and bed were very comfortable, but the bed was a little weird. WE got the "double" bed, which is really just two twin beds pushed together. The gap between the two beds wasn't bad, but noticeable. Also, this means that the covers were only twin sized, so we both couldn't get comfy under 1 set of covers for the whole night.
The biggest drawback to the Perren is the wireless internet access. It was fine EARLY in the morning, but almost inaccessible or SUPER-slow any other time of the day. I hope they work to upgrade their current system.
We never ate at the upstairs restaurant, and only once tried the bar / restaurant downstairs. The downstairs restaurant has a good selection, and the food was very good. We did not get the half-board, instead opting to try restaurants around town. That said, the half-board is probably the most frugal way to go, from what I can tell, for eating dinner vs. trying to eat around town. But you do miss out on some neat places around town.
All-in-all, we loved our stay in Zermatt and at the Hotel Perren. If we are so lucky as to make it back, we would definitely consider staying at the Hotel Perren again.
