The New York Times recently put together their own list of spring destinations based on late-season conditions. Here’s a quick overview of their choices:
Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia: Whistler has received attention from around the world this winter, but spring is a time when the resort really shines. Between the TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival and Blackcomb’s closing date of May 25, Whistler is definitely worth a visit. And, for those looking to ski in the middle of summer, the resort boasts a glacier at the summit of Blackcomb which runs lifts for lucky skiers and riders from June 19 to July 25.
Squaw Valley, California: Lake Tahoe received an amazing amount of snow throughout the year and the area normally receives more storms in the late spring months than in any other time of the season. In fact, Heavenly just announced last week that they are extending their season to April 25. Squaw Valley is expected to close on May 9.
Banff, Alberta: Located in Banff National Park, Banff’s base elevation is 7,200 feet allowing it to stay open until May 24. Between now and then visitors will enjoy a huge selection of fun events at the area’s three major ski resorts.
Snowbird, Utah: With an average of 500 inches of snow falling per season, Snowbird can sometimes run their lifts into June. However, their projected closing date is Memorial Day.
Mammoth Mountain, California: With a peak elevation of 11,053 feet, Mammoth’s season can sometimes extend well into June.
