5mm rap rope
Check out this trip report at http://www.skiingthebackcountry.com/blogs/Low_Avy_Danger_Equals_Fun_in_the_Park.php. They used a 5mm rope to rappel? Isn't that pretty small? Is it strong enough?
What type of rope would you carry backcountry skiing?

Re: 5mm rap rope
I think 5mm cord is rated to 1200 lb’s. I carry 100’ of 6mm power cord from campmor.com. It’s rated for 1600 lb’s so it will work as cheap light emergency rope. I wouldn’t use it for climbing because the force from a fall could be much higher than 1600 lb’s. I read someplace a few years back that (I think it was) Doug Coombs carried 6mm cord because it was strong enough for what he needed and cheep if he had to leave it behind.
