Need help deciding between Jackson Hole and Colorado for a trip the last week in December. From PA and usually ski the ice out east. Last year spent the last week of December at Heavenly. Had rain the first half of the week then got the powder dumped on us. Have 2 boys ages 8 and 6. The 8 yr old had a great time at Heavenly with mostly Blues and an occasional Black. The 6 Yr old spent most of his time in ski school. We have never been to Colorado or Jackson Hole. We would probably prefer Jackson Hole but I am wondering if it would be too difficult for the kids. Also I am interested in other things like:
What are the costs compared to Colorado resorts?
How easy is it to fly from the east to Jackson Hole?
Are there other attractions worth seeing in Jackson Hole that would be worth doing while there? I saw on their website that old faithful was not far away. Is this something even worth doing?
Other than Jackson Hole are there resorts that people would recommend for a family of 4 in Colorado? What are the chances of not having snow around Christmas at either location?
Thanks for any input.
Colorado will have a better chance of good to great snow because of elevation. The amount of beginner terrrain is much smaller than many of the resorts in Colorado. I would go with any of the resorts closest to Denver because they are extremely family friendly. Also, the air is getting tight into the connecting airports serving resorts like Vail, Steamboat and Telluride. Space is booking fast. I would call as soon as possible to check rates and availability. I am available to chat weekly until 5 pm. 800 525 2052 ext 3670. Cassandra
If you're skiing with kids, Colorado is the definite choice over Jackson Hole for the reasons already stated. It's definitely more kid friendly from a kids services and ski terrain perspective. Even if the kids are capable of skiing the terrain that Jackson Hole offers, if you catch it during a bad snow season you will only be able to ski about a quarter of the mountain due to the nature of the terrain (much smaller percentage of 'groomers' than in Colorado). The last time I was there most of the mountain was unskiable (February) because the base wasn't deep enough and shrubs were sticking up everywhere through the snow, so we ended up driving to Grand Targhee every day to find good snow.
