Listen up ski bunnies: it’s already snowing in Aspen!
I’m not talking about a little flurry or a few flakes that melted as soon as they hit the ground. It’s been dumping for two days straight and feels more like December than September 22. Having lived in Colorado for a total of ten years, I know better than to bust out my snowboard quite yet—chances are we’ll see sixty degrees again before the end of next week. But still. It’s exciting.
I mean, forget about Halloween, Thanksgiving or Christmas. My favorite holiday in Colorado is the First Snow.
The First Snow celebration ritual is as follows: I’ll pull all my snowboard equipment out of storage and bring it into the house. I’m not just talking about the hard stuff. I’ll grab it all: pants, jacket, mittens, and goggles and pop my favorite snowboard video into the DVD player or maybe cue up the winter playlist on my iPod to get me in the right mood. I put on all my gear, strap in, and am not afraid to use couches, beds, and carpets to practice the tricks I’ve been dreaming about mastering. I love to rock back and forth from edge to edge and try different hat and goggle combinations, all in front of the mirror of course. It’s my favorite at-home-alone-with-the-dog dance.
It won’t be long before the resorts start rallying for opening day, with Keystone and Breckenridge always in the running to be the first, usually sometime in late October.
I don’t care that it’s freezing cold and the roads are already a mess. I’m happy just knowing my first official powder day is right around the corner.
