Penn State's electronic ski
Hi everyone I'm a computer engineering student at Penn State and a very avid skier so my senior design project is embedding a electronic sensor system into a pair of skis. I was thinking about sensors to give you, your current speed, distance traveled, and hang time. Also the system would record your fastest speed and hang time. The system would then send this info wirelessly to a wristwatch or a head up display in the goggles. I want to know if anyone has any other ideas or input. Being the target group for our project you input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Sounds like a cool project to work on.

·          How about something that tracks the ski's current altitude and vertical feet skied (per run, per day and maybe even per ski vacation)?

·          Some places have GPS check points so people know what part of the mountain others in their group are skiing at any particular time.  Maybe each person in a group could have access to everyone's sensor to know who's doing what.

·          How about something that could connect to a computer at the end of the day that would interact with a virtual trail map, showing you what runs you skied and even shows every turn made?

·          It might also be smart to add some sort of tracking system for powder days.  There's nothing worse than spending time looking for a loose ski when you could be waist deep in fresh pow!

All of this new technology in our sport is eventually going to affect the embellished stories that are told during après.

Re: Penn State's electronic ski
What about modelling it on the Nike/iPod gadget that goes in the sole of a running shoe and measures all of that sort of information. I would imagine that putting it under the ski boot and above the ski would protect the device. Maybe if you can put it inside the boot would protect the device and it would hook into the iPod like the just mentioned device...?
